Sewage Sludge Disposal in Switzerland

چکیده

Sewage sludge was used as fertilizer in agriculture in Switzerland since the begin ning of modern waste water treatment. During the last 40 years several difficulties arose with the agricultural use. The problems with pathogenic germs could be solved with a prepasteurisation. The contamination with heavy metals was reduced during the years but remained a cause for concern. The fear of mad cow disease and the contamination with persistent organic pollutants were 2003 the reasons for a ban of sewage sludge in the Swiss agriculture. At present the recycling of the phosphorus contained in sewage sludge and in other wastes is a goal of the Swiss policy.

Environmental and Landfill Operational Aspects of Co-disposal of Dewatered Sewage Sludge and Municipal Solid Waste

The co-disposal of dewatered sewage sludge and municipal solid waste may cause significant impacts (such as total and differential settlement, slope stability of the waste, and leachability) on landfill operations and the subsurface environment. The objectives of this study were to investigate the co-disposal of dewatered sewage sludge and municipal solid waste with respect to their consolidati...

Sewage Sludge: Characteristics and Recovery Options

In this paper, an overview on sewage sludge characteristics and recovery routes is presented. Starting from an analysis of typical sewage sludge characteristics as found in literature, the most promising disposal options are presented. A focus on incinerated sewage sludge ash (ISSA) follows. Most of the authors agree on considering pyrolysis and gasification as the most viable treatments for sl...

Section 14. METAL WASTES BIOLOGICAL REMOVAL AND CHEMICAL RECOVERY OF METALS FROM SLUDGES

Utilization of sewage sludge on land is an appealing sludge disposal method. The reasons are not just because of the environmental and economic constraints associated with other disposal methods such as incineration and landfilling, but also because the sludge is beneficial both as a soil conditioner and as a fertilizer [1,2]. However, the major limitation with land application of sewage sludge...

Sustainability of Domestic Sewage Sludge Disposal

Activated sludge is now one of the most widely used biological processes for the treatment of wastewaters from medium to large populations. It produces high amounts of sewage sludge that can be managed and perceived in two main ways: as a waste it is discharged in landfill, as a fertilizer it is disposed in agriculture with direct application to soil or subjected to anaerobic digestion and comp...

A Decision Tool to Assess Greenhouse Gases of Sewage Sludge Treatment and Disposal Routes

Sewage sludge production increases continuously reaching almost 20% (946 700 t 1 118 795 tons of dry matters in 2007) during the (directly or after composting). The remaining 30% was incinerated (with or without household wastes) or landfilled. Nowadays, sludge reduction is a major concern. This activity has to becom be careful to the environmental impacts of sludge treatment and disposal route...
